Within the first lesson my seven year old had found a sport he was good at. We will continue to book with this school, as every year Mat increases Tom's confidence and enjoyment of surfing. In my opinion there is no better surfing school in Newquay.

Message : This was our first time in Newquay and our family highly recommended some surfing lessons with Surfing The Dream. As well as giving excellent tuition, Mat is great at encouragement and made the whole experience so much fun that our young daughter was standing before the end of her first 2 hour lesson! She did so well and loved it so much that we booked a second 2 hour lesson for later that week which helped build her confidence even more. The boys idea of hell on holiday was a group surf lesson but they both needed some guidance to make sure they had the right technique for the future. It's not easy pleasing two teenagers but both of them really enjoyed the lesson. Really improved technique confidence and safety awareness and felt really informed by matt Apparently the best two hours of the holiday and if I hear "matt said" again....... Joking aside really proffesional service and the kids had a great time. Hope you will still be in Cornwall next year after some practice in Perth at Xmas.

Message : I have always wanted to learn to surf but had never gotten around to it until a holiday in Newquay. I had my very first one-to-one lesson with Mat!!I did feel a bit old (edging into my late 30's) but this was no problem. Mat went through the safety side of things and basics before going in the water. That's when the fun started! After quite a few attempts I finally got it, stood up and rode a wave!! I couldn't believe it!! And then I did it again!!! I really never thought that anyone could teach me to surf in such a short time and the best thing was Mat was just as chuffed as I was!
If you want to learn to surf, book a lesson with Mat. He is independant so a bit more flexible than the surf schools, a very good teacher, professional, patient, funny (and quite cute!). Don't dream it go and do it. I may even try again at home in Northumberland! Thanks Mat!

Message : We had a fantastic 3 afternoons with Mat. He was just what you want in an instructor. Explains and shows you the steps you need to surf well, then lets you out, watches, spots what you need to do to get it right, encourages, and gets you standing up on that board. Our age range was 11-43 and we couldn't have had a better teacher. Our youngest daughter was standing in no time, so Mat was able to show her more advanced moves, whilst our older daughter and my wife needed more one to one, as did I. Mat was able to spot what needed tweaking and sets us off again. Always cheering when we did get it right, even if it was just for a second.

Kirsteen was a great part of the duo and took photos of us all, and kept us informed as to where we needed to be each day as the tides changed.

Have told everyone we know how great Mat and Kirsteen are. Hope to be back soon, and will touch base with them again.

Driftwood lodge is the most chilled out and friendly lodge I've ever stayed at, and I've stayed at a lot. Kirsteen and Mat have made me feel really welcome and all the people staying here hang out together.

If you're thinking of learning to surf then book in here, you won't find better or cheaper lessons and digs in Newquay.

Message :  I just turned up out of the blue and was made really welcome by Mat and Kirsteen. The lodge is only 5 minsfrom the sea and close to all the pubs and clubs. It was quite full when I was there and a really friendly crowd. Free use of the kitchen and TV in the dining room. Definitely coming back soon for a surf lesson with Mat!

Comments :  Me and my friends were really impressed with our brief stay at Driftwood lodge last month. The rooms were clean and comfortable. Use of the kitchen was a bonus and there was even a secure storage area for my surf board. My friend took Mat up on his offer of a lesson and would recommend him for anyone learning to surf inNewquay.

Comments :  A week at Driftwood lodge was just what my friend and I needed! The chilled, relaxed, friendly atmosphere made us feel instantly at home and welcome. Ideal location as only minutes away from beach, amenities in the town and nightlife. We took Mat up on his offer for surf lesson as complete novices and through his clear instruction, patience, encouragement and support had mastered the basic skills. Would definitely return to Driftwood lodge as Mat andKirsteenhospitality would be difficult to beat!

Comments :  I had an excellent stay at Driftwood Lodge. The room was very comfortable and the house warm and cosy. Having access to a kitchen and washing machine was a real bonus. The other guests were nice and Mat, Kirsteenand Wee Jimmy made it feel really relaxed and welcoming. Will certainly stay again and learn to surf better with Mats surf school Thanks for your warmth and hospitality!!

Comments :  Stayed with Matt and Kirsteen who both made me feel exceptionally welcome and was fortunate enough to have a surf lesson with Matt. Not liking the water at all Matt soon made me feel extremely safe and comfortable having explained everything to me really clearly and that he would be there at all times. Relaxed after the safety brief I was then able to go into the sea for the first time and after having achieved the lying down quickly I was then ready to progress. Another lesson on the beach it was time to go back out and to try and stand which I achieved in no time at all from there on in a big grin was there for all to see. With out doubt a superb time was had and it goes without saying the instruction from Matt was excellent and I would recommend him to all. A big thanks to you.

Comments :  I am here back for my second season at the best surf lodge in Newquay! After finishing Uni I couldn’t resist repeating another fantastic summer in the lodge and am happy to see another fantastic bunch of people who are here for a long term summer. Mat and Kirsteen are ace landlords and arepatient with us crazy bunch! The house is always warm and clean with beds changed regularly and fun time shared rooms. One of the handiest features apart from the free Wi-Fi is the secure surf shack attached onto the house where we can grab our boards and surf whenever we want. Always excellent hygiene in bathrooms and kitchens. I would rate this place five stars as it is fun, friendly and welcoming and also situated in a fantastic location inNewquay. Mat is also a qualified surf instructor and took me and my friend on our first surf lesson and we have been bitten by the bug ever since!! Overall a wonderful place, definitely come and stay.

Comments :  I went to Newquay for my birthday and to ensure I had tried surfing before I was 30, we stayed at Driftwood Lodge which is always a fantastic place to stay, it's so convenient and friendly. We had arranged to have a surf lesson with Mat and although it was blowing a hoolie we plucked up the courage, donned an ever flattering wetsuit and set off for the bay. Mat was amazing, we had so much fun and his patience and teaching style was brilliant, we spent nearly three hours in and out of the water, learning various techniques and general knowledge about surfing. In the water Mat looked after us and was constantly able to give us little improvements to ensure that we got the most out of our lesson, we managed to stand for about a second but it made it all worth it. Mat is an excellent teacher and provided us with all the kit we needed. He was willing to put in the extra time to ensure we succeeded and we cannot wait to go back and have a few more lessons because for some surfing may just be a sport but for others its a way of life!
